I READ with interest the list about the 20 Geordie heroes who have been installed in a walk of fame on the Newcastle Quayside – names like Kathryn Tickell, Sting, Ant and Dec, Brendan Foster, Alan Shearer, Robson Green, Bobby Robson (Echo, Mar 25).

I was surprised that the biggest of the lot had been left out: Stan Laurel. He was born in 1890, and although other parts of the region like Bishop Auckland and Gainford have links with him, he lived in North Shields for the first 12 years of his life before he became one of the biggest megastars on the planet.

Even today, Laurel and Hardy have fan clubs in every country in the world. How can the people on the list compare with him?
