I READ with interest the debate on the decriminalisation of hard drugs (HAS, Oct 1). It strikes me that there already is a drug in widespread use which is supplied in a controlled and secure way – supposedly at least.

This is alcohol.

Sadly, no one who has been in a town centre on a Friday or Saturday night would claim that the fight against its abuse has been successful.

The amount of police time and resources that it takes up is enormous.

Would the same treatment of hard drugs produce any better results?
