VJ CONNOR’S recollections of listening to Dick Barton’s radio adventures in the 1940s (HAS, Sept 21) doubtless struck a chord with many older readers.

The fact is that we got more fun out of listening to the radio than today’s kids do from their computers and TVs.

What’s more it was wholesome fun.

My own favourite was Journey into Space which came a few years after Dick Barton. Its tales of inter-planetary adventure had kids glued to their sets every Monday and Friday evening.

Some adults scoffed, dismissing it as fantastic nonsense, but very soon they had to eat their words.

I’ve no doubt the programme provided many kids with their first entry into the wonderful world of science in a way that some lacklustre schools of the time failed to do.
