I AM not sure how, from any set of first principles, any country has an entitlement to the sovereignty of the Falklands.

It is clearly a bone of contention for a critical mass of opinion in Argentina, and in some circles here.

It would be foolish to have another war over it.

Perhaps one day there will be a negotiated settlement, but how we get to that is unclear.

It would make sense for Argentina to raise it in the United Nations, and ask it to be honest brokers in negotiations.

In the meantime, the present occupants should remain there and enjoy neighbourly relations with Argentina.

The Falklands are a remnant of the age of empire which has not been cleared up amicably and may require the wisdom of Solomon to resolve.

In the meantime, vulnerable people here will suffer cuts because all that matters in some quarters is pride and memories of past glories.

Absurdity reigns supreme.
