FOR once I find myself in total agreement with Tim Farron, president of the Liberal Democrats, that his members are like cockroaches.

They lurk around in dark corners awaiting opportunity to eat what is discarded and create great upset when they are seen.

After this peculiar statement by the leading Lib Dem, I decided to compare other parties to the insect world.

UKIP are gadflies. They get under the skin. They have done this very well in the European Parliament and especially well in Eastleigh, Rotherham, Middlesbrough and Croydon, where they have managed to burrow and irritate both David Cameron and Ed Miliband.

Labour are the leeches of the political world. They find a healthy host such as the economy and suck the lifeblood out of it until it is dry. Then they then drop off, wait for the economy to heal (always by another party) before jumping on again and repeating their bloodsucking process.

The Conservatives are the ants of the political world. They storm around in well ordered lines following their leader until he cannot decide in which direction he wishes to go.
