WHEN C4’s occasional series of traveller-themed documentaries began, it largely focused on the extravagant weddings. Subsequent programmes have also shown that communions are a very big deal in Gypsy culture, but now we are going to get a look at how the community marks other rites of passage, the ones that maybe don’t place quite so much emphasis on an elaborate frock.
As the title My Big Fat Gypsy Christening suggests, births take centre stage, but the programme is more than just a look at christening parties – it shows how pregnant women are sometimes expected to stick to strict rules of conduct, while breastfeeding is a controversial topic.
