IT is hard to believe that it is a year today since the death of that wonderful County Durham lad, Sir Bobby Robson.

Time has flown quickly since then. It was a day we all knew wasn’t far off but which still came with a national sense of loss.

But we remember Sir Bobby today with pride that he was one of us, and with a lasting appreciation of his life.

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has raised almost £2.5m so far, providing first-class facilities for cancer sufferers in this region.

The fact that the foundation has been boosted by more than £1m since Sir Bobby’s death is evidence of the affection in which he continues to be held.

The value of his legacy is summed up on Page 3 today by the story of Terry Williams, from Stockton, who suffers from renal cancer and is now being treated at the Newcastle cancer centre set up by Sir Bobby.

“He dedicated the rest of his life to helping other people,” says Terry. “He has given me a chance and I may get lucky.”

We live in an age when there are “national days” to promote all kinds of things. Indeed, tomorrow is Yorkshire Day, celebrating all that is good about the county of Yorkshire.

Why not make July 31 “Sir Bobby Robson Day” here in the North-East and make it a day when we remember a great man with a donation to his cancer foundation.
