A TEESDALE village is delving into its past after residents formed their own history group.

The Staindrop Historical Society was launched in a bid to give residents the opportunity to find out more about their community and the group currently meets on the second Wednesday of each month at Scarth Hall, in Staindrop.

The group will be officially launched in Scarth Hall on March 8, at 7pm, where there will be a presentation about the research into Staindrop’s First World War veterans and general discussion.

On April 28 they will also hold their first major event ‘Warhorse’ which examines the village’s contribution to the Bowes Museum’s First World War project while the film Warhorse will be shown and military historian Andy Robertshaw will give a talk on the making of the film.

The Royal Dragoon Guards will also bringing along some artefacts from their museum in York.

Refreshments and a bar will be open from 6.30pm and tickets cost £5 and include refreshments.

The group are also planning an event for people to bring along their favourite artefacts, family heirlooms or photos to the Scarth Hall to meet with a panel of advisers/experts to tell them about the history of them sometime in May or June.

Members are looking into several different topics and are also able to assist anyone wanting to do their own genealogical research.
