A WEEKLY series of ten-minute talks on one of the region’s best-loved buildings is to get underway this week.

Stories from the long and colourful history of Durham Cathedral will be revealed as part its Open Treasure programme.

Each Wednesday at 2pm throughout December, a short talk will give cathedral visitors a greater insight into the building’s history.

The talks start on December 7 with ‘Building the Monks’ Dormitory’, followed by Grayson Perry’s tapestry Death of a Working Hero on December 14, Building the Great Kitchen on December 21 and (Trading with the World, looking at the role of the Durham monastery in world trade on December 28.

Marie-Thérèse Mayne, Exhibitions Officer at Durham Cathedral, said: “Since the launch of Open Treasure in July we have been delighted to be able to welcome the public into the incredible surroundings of Durham Cathedral’s monastic buildings.

“With such a wide range of objects for visitors to enjoy , both as part of our permanent exhibitions or through the temporary collection displays, our Ten Minute Talks will enable visitors to find out more of the hidden history and stories behind the collections and the buildings.”
