THE RMT has been urged to “get back round the table” after it announced fresh action in its protracted dispute on Northern rail.

The union said the 24 hour strike would take place on May 30 and blasted the train company for its “sheer intransigence”.

The long running dispute over what the RMT describes as the safety critical role of guards and plans to introduce driver-only trains has already resulted in a number of walkouts.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “We are angry and frustrated that Arriva continue to ignore a perfectly reasonable union proposal to invite the Department for Transport to join us in three way talks aimed at finding a solution.”

Richard Allan, Northern’s deputy managing director, said: “We urge the RMT to get back round the table with us for open-minded, meaningful talks to deliver the modern railway our customers want.”
