ROADWORKS are reported to be creating long delays on the A1 in North Yorkshire.
Traffic is reported to be at a standstill, with motorists describing the scene as chaotic.
Earlier this week, Highways England warned there would be delayes while a new bridge is lifted into place.
The work, part of the A1 Leeming to Barton upgrade scheme, is to replace Fort Bridge at Catterick.
The agency said the A1 would be closed in both directions between junction 51 Leeming Bar and Scotch Corner until 6pm on Sunday.
Motorists stuck in traffic have contacted The Northern Echo to complain about a lack of information and signage at the scene.
One driver from Darlington, who asked not to be named, joined the A1 at the A68 and said it had taken him two hours to move just over two miles.
He said: "What are the highways agency doing? There's no adequate provision for traffic.
"Tempers are fraying. It's absolutely outrageous. We're hard working people, this is our day off and they've ruined it."
Highways England advised people to plan their journeys, using the alternative routes signposted off the A1 closure and leave extra time.
