TRAIN passengers are being warned that the line between Sunderland and Newcastle will be closed tonight (Tuesday, December 8) until Thursday morning (December 10).

The closure is to allow emergency engineering work to repair the overhead line, meaning no Northern Rail trains will operate tomorrow in either direction.

The line will be closed from 9pm tonight (Tuesday, December, 8) until 5.20am on Thursday (December 10) while Network Rail engineers work to return the line to train operators.

Rail replacement services will be operating between Newcastle and Sunderland and station teams will be on hand to help customers with any queries.

The last services to operate this evening (Tuesday) will be the 9.10pm Middlesbrough to Hexham train, diverted via Eaglescliffe, and the 9.18pm Newcastle to Middlesbrough diverted via the East Coast Mainline.
