LORRIES causing a major nuisance for local residents could be curbed under new powers.

A special drop in session is being held after complaints about lorries parking in the Colburn and Brough St Giles areas near Catterick Garrison were made to police and Richmondshire District Council.

Members of the Safer Richmondshire Community Safety Team have called the meeting at Colburn Leisure Centre on November 14 from 10am to 1pm.

The say a Public Spaces Protection Order could be brought in to help sort out the problems.

Members of the partnership have been told that some drivers use the area as a toilet, leave litter and cause noise disturbance in the early hours when preparing to drive off. Lorry companies have been advised about the problems but they have continued.

“The issues caused by lorries parking in this area have become a real nuisance for residents and businesses , and we are already taking some steps to try and resolve them,” said Callum McKeon, Corporate Director at Richmondshire District Council.

“However, we now need to better understand the full extent of the issues and consider if we could use any other power to resolve things, such as the new Public Spaces Protection Order. It could provide a long term solution with conditions such as stopping lorries from being in the area other than for business purposes, being a possibility.

“This drop in session will help shape our next steps. If anyone has suffered as a result of the lorries, we urge them to come along and share their views,” he added.
