DRIVERS in the North have been urged to check conditions before setting out in the next 24 hours as the first icy blasts arrive.
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing tonight (Monday) and will continue for much of tomorrow (Tuesday), causing difficult travelling conditions.
The Highways Agency said it is well prepared to deal with frost and ice on the roads, but has reminded motorists that they should drive to the conditions.
Salt spreading will take place around the clock on all major routes in the North East with temperatures set to stay around freezing until Wednesday morning.
The Highways Agency has asked drivers to consider whether their vehicle is ready for winter and to check fuel and fluid levels and tyre pressure.
