THE sky will be lit up when part of the region is transformed into a winter wonderland.

The Newcastle-Gateshead Winter Festival programme will feature enchanted parks, an eye-catching parade of illuminated Glowmobiles and art installations.

The free month-long event begins on December 4, building up to a grand climax on New Year's Eve.

It has been developed by culture10, based at the Newcastle- Gateshead Initiative, in partnership with Gateshead Council and Newcastle City Council.

One of the features of the event - Glow 07 - builds on the success of last year's Newcastle-Gateshead Glow Trail.

It brings together a series of art projections, installations and illuminations created by national and international artists.

Enchanted Parks will see Newcastle's Leazes Park and Gateshead's Saltwell Park brought magically to life with installations reflecting the past, present and future.

Artistic director Geraldine Pilgrim, whose work won national acclaim as part of Picture House, at Belsay Hall, in Northumberland, will be producing images with professional and amateur actors.

One of the Glowmobiles, a taxi cab, made its appearance at the launch at Gateshead's Saltwell Park.

It will form part of a parade of cars and other illuminated forms of transport taking to the streets on New Year's Eve and making pit stops across Newcastle and Gateshead before parking at Grey's Monument for a firework finale.
