THE Green Party is to boycott the North-East’s Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

The second PCC elections will be held across the country on Thursday, May 5.

The Greens will not field candidates in Durham, Cleveland or Northumbria, saying the £5,000 candidates’ deposit required is punitive and undemocratic.

A spokeswoman said the PCC position, created by the last coalition government, was too centralised and isolated and had been largely unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, time is running out to register to vote in the PCC elections, with the deadline being Monday (April 18). Visit gov.uk/register-to-vote.

The deadline for applying for a postal vote is 5pm the following day (Tuesday, April 19) and applications for a proxy vote must be submitted by 5pm on Tuesday, April 26.
