AN animal rights group is to hold a 30th birthday celebration in Durham.

Animal Aid, the UK's largest animal rights campaign group, will be giving advice, screening a film and giving away free birthday items in Durham Market Place next Wednesday.

The theme of the party is Ten Ways to Change Your World. Visitors can take part in quizzes to test their knowledge of animals and there will be animal games for children.

The Ten Ways to Change Your World film stars comedian Alexei Sayle, Anne Widdecombe MP, and poet Benjamin Zephaniah.

The party comes to Durham towards the end of a three-month UK tour, which also stops in York on Tuesday, August 7, and Newcastle on Thursday, August 9.

An Animal Aid spokesman said: "Our 30th anniversary tour offers the chance for each and every one of us to take simple steps to help improve the future of our planet."

Animal Aid has campaigned to stop the building of a primate research centre in Cambridge.

It has also campaigned against animal dissection in schools.
