We all have our own phrases when it comes to talking to our friends but the hottest show on TV takes things to another level.

Over the years, Love Island contestants have taught the general public a lot when it comes to dating and using specific terminology is just one of them.

Each season, we learn something new including the grading of an islander’s sex life such as Faye Winter's National Vocational Qualification (NVQ scale) or the “football warm-up” from this year’s winter edition.

We have rounded up some of the best Love Island phrases over time but fear not, there will be more to come over the next few months as the 2023 summer season gets underway.

Some of the best Love Island phrases

The ick

When you’re getting to know someone and notice something they do or say that you don’t like, which often becomes the deal-breaker in a relationship because you can’t see past it.

Example: “He’s given me the ick.”

On job

This is when someone is trying to get to know another islander, meaning they are going to make an effort to hang out or talk to others to see who they have a connection with. It can be done with multiple people on the same day or just one individual.

Example: “Are you on job today boys?”

Pied

A common phrase used each year in the villa when someone has been casually dumped because the other person has no interest in them.

Example: “I think I’ve just been pied.”

Grafting

This is when the islanders acknowledge that they are “working hard” to get someone to notice how much they like them.

Example: “I’ve been grafting for days.”

Head’s been turned

Another phrase that’s used on Love Island and is often spoken when someone is in a couple but they are more interested in another person. This tends to happen a lot when a bombshell comes in or during Casa Amor.

Example: “Do you reckon anyone’s head will turn in Casa?”

Snake

Often used when someone is described as being "sly" because they are not being honest with their feelings or they are going behind someone’s back.

Example: “He is being such a snake you know.”

Crack on

Almost known as the "green light" when the ITV stars have decided they are going to go ahead and get to know/form a relationship with another person.

Example: “I’m going to crack on with her bro.”

What’s your type?

A phrase used as the islanders come into the villa and are questioned by the others on who their ideal partner is based on looks and personality.

Example: “My type is tall and blonde with a cheeky personality.”

Where’s your head at?

A question asked many times throughout the multiple series of Love Island. This is used when islanders are interrogated to find out how they are feeling/where do they stand on the current situation or couple they are in.

Example: “Right so where is your head at then?”

Mugged off

This is said when someone isn’t happy because they personally feel that they have been made a fool of or they are embarrassed about how they have been made to look due to someone else’s actions.

Example: “Nah mate she has mugged me off.”

He/she is giving

When someone is “giving” it means a person likes what they see about someone, meaning they are starting to feel a connection sparking because they can relate to them.

Example: “Oh girls he is really giving you know, he’s a bit of me.”

It is what it is

When a situation can’t be changed and the islanders accept something happening the way it has happened. Sometimes, they find themselves doing what they have to do to get out of the predicament.

Example: "Listen babes it is what it is."

Loyal

If you are honest and stay true to who you are by not hurting someone or doing anything to upset them/betray them. Mostly used when islanders have in fact not been loyal.

Example: “Mate I’m staying loyal to her.”
