THE family of “much loved” cyclist who died after a collision with a car last week have said he will be “deeply missed”.

John Laycock was cycling on the A689 between The Wynd and Butterwick Road in Billingham last Thursday when he was involved in a collision with a Renault Clio at around 1.40pm.

The life-long Newcastle United fan was taken to James Cook University Hospital but sadly died.

His family today released a tribute saying:“John was a 73 year old much loved husband, father of three and grandfather of seven.

"He was a keen cyclist, fitness fanatic and lifelong Newcastle United supporter.

“He will be deeply missed by all his family and many friends.

“We as a family would like to request privacy at this time to enable us to grieve.”

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision or saw either the car or cyclist prior to the crash to come forward. They would also ask any drivers who have dashcam footage to get in touch.

Please call Durham Constabulary on 101 quoting incident number 226 of October 5.
