HUNDREDS of adventurers have taken on the challenge of a "wild" 10km race course that saw participants run, swim and crawl their way to the finish line.
The return of the annual Stockton River Rat Race this weekend attracted more than 1,000 runners to take part in the event that incorporates the Tees Barrage, HM Bark Endeavour Ship jump and the White Water Centre into its route.
Fundraisers hitting the track in aid of the Children with Cancer UK charity on Saturday were advised to bring "a pair of trainers and a sense of adventure" by race organisers.
Hannah Snell, event director, said: "The River Rat Race takes place in Stockton-on-Tees and offers an adventure run, some obstacles, and some water-based activity.
"The course is fully way-marked along paths, precincts and parks through the stimulating riverside of the River Tees, returning to the event village after approximately 10km of running."
Adam Dyson was the first male competitor over the finish line for this year's race, completing the course in 53 minutes and 45 seconds.
Amanda Mcnabola was the first female to cross the line in one hour and 13 minutes.
