A LARGE pane of glass narrowly missed hitting people in a bus queue when it fell from the top of a busy high street shopping centre yesterday.

The glass window smashed onto the pavement after falling from the Castlegate Shopping Centre in Stockton at around 1pm on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the town centre being packed with Saturday shoppers at the time, nobody was injured as a result of the incident, the cause of which is currently unknown.

The Northern Echo understands that the glass fell from an area of the building that is currently covered by scaffolding.

The fire brigade, police and council were called to the scene shortly after the glass fell and landed outside the Thornton’s shop on the High Street, narrowly missing pedestrians.

One witness took to social media to share his experience, saying: “We had just walked through the doors when literally a minute later, I heard the glass come down.

“Someone could have been seriously hurt.”

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “We were called to assist police and a crew from Stockton went along to assist.

“The council and police were in attendance and a couple of panes of glass were removed and made safe by the fire brigade.

“Nobody was hurt.”
