A BUDGET supermarket has moved to reassure customers it is in "advanced discussions" about bringing a new store to Stockton.

Lidl closed its town centre branch at Wellington Square earlier this month, days before opening a new store on the former Nifco site on Yarm Road.

But the supermarket chain is looking at other town centre sites to find one which can accommodate its new "store concept".

David Murphy, Lidl UK head of property, said: “Unfortunately, the Wellington Square location of our Stockton town centre branch was not compatible with our new store concept but we are in advanced discussions with the council in relation to other town centre sites with a view to developing a brand new store.

“The regeneration of the town centre has been hugely impressive, as are the numerous events and activities that bring people in throughout the year, and this has undoubtedly created a very attractive retail location."

Councillor Nigel Cooke, Stockton Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said: “Having a quality supermarket like Lidl is a big draw for the town centre and we are heartened by Lidl’s commitment to retain a town centre presence.

“We are in advanced discussions with them about potential sites for a new town centre store. It’s particularly pleasing to hear Lidl’s recognition of all the work we are doing to make Stockton town centre a great place to invest and do business.”
