A NEW 20mph speed limit recently imposed outside a Stockton primary school is already succeeding in slowing down motorists.

A large speed bump has also been installed in Oxbridge Lane while funds have been secured for Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) on Yarm Road and Hartburn Avenue.

Residents, traders and Oxbridge Lane Primary School all backed the road safety scheme, led by Labour ward councillor for Parkfield and Oxbridge, David Rose.

He said: "The speed bump and 20mph zone have had a noticeable effect."

In 2012, 11 police speed camera deployments alone detected more than 450 speeding offences on the stretch of Oxbridge Lane.

During recent years Cllr Rose also introduced a 20mph zone in minor roads around the school.

“Parkfield and Oxbridge ward includes two of the main roads into Stockton town centre, along with the popular ‘cut through’ road of Hartburn Avenue which links these routes.

“The first priority was to try and slow traffic around Oxbridge Lane Primary School where hundreds of children, plus shoppers and older residents who use a number of residential facilities in the area, have to cross Oxbridge Lane regularly.

“New SIDs will be in place soon to help deter motorists from speeding on the other two routes, and we will continue to monitor speeds and work with the police to enforce against speeding drivers.

“These are highly populated urban areas and local people have asked for more to be done to slow traffic.

“Improved road safety is just one of the priorities for the ward, and we have made a good start in trying to tackle this for the benefit of pedestrians, and also drivers and cyclists.”
