MOUNTAIN rescuers had to come to the aid of a man who fell while working near Yarm.

Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team were called out today by the North East Ambulance Service to help in the rescue of  the 46-year-old yesterday (Thursday).

The man from County Durham had been undertaking survey work in a small steep sided valley in open ground just to the south west of the Tall Trees Hotel near Yarm, when he slipped and injured his leg and was unable to walk.

Paramedics from the road ambulance service were on scene and attended to the man’s injuries and called on the help of the Mountain Rescue Team to get him to the road and the waiting ambulance.

Where the man had fallen was steep ground with a covering of dense shrubs. The Team got the man onto the stretcher and managed to get him to the ambulance. Because of the nature of the terrain it was necessary in parts to haul the stretcher in order to avoid the dense covering of shrubs.

A spokesperson for the Mountain Rescue Team said: "Although the terrain was particularly difficult the type of stretcher that the Team use is designed to deal with a wide range of conditions.

"Fifteen members of the Team responded to the call-out so we had sufficient personnel on hand to get the man to the waiting ambulance and on route to A & E quickly."
