A MAYOR has endured two nights on the streets this Christmas to raise money for charity and awareness of homelessness.

Councillor Brian Hunt, Mayor of Redcar and Cleveland, slept out on Redcar High Street from 9pm to 8am on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, before taking part in the Seaside town’s Boxing Day Dip.

Mr Hunt has already raised more than £3,500 for Redcar’s Coatham House, a charity which provides safe accommodation for young people in housing need, and Earthbeat, a theatre group for adults with learning disabilities.

The 68-year-old said: “It was wet, windy and cold but, of course, that’s what some people have to endure. I am very passionate about these charities because I know the fantastic work they do and we want to raise as much money as possible as well as raising awareness of this issue. Now I’m looking forward to a good night’s rest in my own bed - something everyone should have every night.”

Former mayor Councillor Mike Findley and his wife, Judith, visited Cllr Hunt last night.

Cllr Findley said: “What Barry is doing, raising awareness of the many people sleeping rough, is an absolute amazing gesture and typical of the man. Well done Mr Mayor, you are a credit to the Borough of Redcar and Cleveland.”

Cllr Hunt regularly sleeps rough in January with a group of charity fundraisers to raise money for Coatham House.

This time, as well as raising funds online, Cllr Hunt secured £500 by touring council offices dressed as a penguin and carrying a collection bucket.
