CHRISTMAS is going underground at a mining museum.

This weekend families can take their children to the underground grotto at the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum to meet Santa and take part in festive crafts and games.

Amid the twinkling lights underground at the mine, in Skinningrove, east Cleveland, children will receive gifts from the big man himself.

While waiting families will receive a drink and sweet treat as part of their admission.

There will also be children’s crafts, pre-loved toys for sale, raffle, tombola and second-hand books as well as stocking fillers.

“We’re really excited to be able again to host our highly popular Christmas celebrations,” said education manager Jean Banwell.

Money raised by the event will contribute towards the museum’s future.

It has just secured first round support from the Coastal Communities fund for a £1.7m project to expand the museum.
