THE emergency services were called to Saltburn Pier on Saturday night to reports of a man on the wrong side of the railings.
Cleveland Police's helicopter was scrambled at about 9.30pm and Redcar's lifeboat was at the scene while a police negotiator talked to the man.
Eventually the man was persuaded to move to safety.
A statement from the RNLI said:"The Redcar RNLI lifeboat was tasked just after 9.30pm on Saturday when Cleveland Police requested assistance with an incident involving a man on the wrong side of the railings on Saltburn pier.
"The lifeboat stood by until a police negotiator persuaded the man to move away from danger."
Coastguard teams from nearby Skinningrove and Staithes were also called but were stood down as they made their way to the scene.
The man was taken into police custody.
