THIS beautiful scene of what looks like glowing mist at Huntcliff, Saltburn, was caused by storm waters being blown back over the cliff by high winds.

Northern Echo Camera Club member David Hankin captured the image on Thursday (January 14) after being alerted to the unusual phenomenon by a friend.

He said: "I got a call from a neighbour of mine, Stewart Grainger, who was working in Redcar and suggested that I should grab my camera and get over to Huntcliff as soon as possible as the force and direction of gales were blowing the storm waters that were pouring off the land above, straight back over the top of the cliffs. As luck would have it, the sun briefly appeared and caught the water and made the falls look like they were on fire. It must be a rare phenomenon."

More than 80 photographers have already signed up for the club and a meeting for members was held at The Northern Echo's offices earlier this month. Members have the chance to submit images to a monthly photography competition to be judged by the paper's photographic co-ordinator Sarah Caldecott.

The winner will receive a £50 prize.
