DAVID Cameron "does not know his Tees from his Tyne", the new Labour MP for Redcar has said.

Anna Turley, who replaced Liberal Democrat Ian Swales at the general election, dismissed the Prime Minister's desire to build a "northern powerhouse" in England.

Ms Turley said the country already has one in the Teesside area that she represents.

Highlighting Redcar's steel making heritage, she said she would strive to put Teesside back at the heart of Britain's industrial economy.

Making her maiden Commons speech, Ms Turley said: "As we continue the debate this afternoon about devolution and growth across the UK, I want to remind this Conservative Government, whose Prime Minister doesn't seem to know his Tees from his Tyne, that we already have a northern powerhouse in this country.

"We already have a northern powerhouse and it's called Teesside.

"And I will do my bit here in this House to put us once more at the beating heart of the UK's industrial economy."
