PLANS for an ambitious £30m snow centre in Middlesbrough, which could create about 350 jobs, have taken a step forward.

A main ski slope, nursery slope, ice climbing wall, indoor skydiving and restaurants make up the plans for the seven-acre site, near the Riverside Stadium.

The Northern Echo:

The area between the Temenos sculpture and Middlesbrough College, at Middlehaven, is earmarked for the private development, being put forward by Teesside company Cool Runnings (NE).

Extensive plans detailing the layout of the site have now been put to Middlesbrough Council for consideration.

The plans show a main ski slope and nursery slope, other leisure uses, areas for associated retail, bars and eateries, car parking and a terrace which looks out over the Middlehaven Dock.

Extras include facilities for sledging, tubing, ice wall climbing, an ice bar, a trampoline park, indoor sky dive centre, climbing walls and more.

Rachael Howson, of Cool Runnings (NE) Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be in a position to have submitted planning documents for consideration and would like to thank everyone who has worked on the proposals so far.

“The feedback we have received from the consultation period was overwhelmingly positive and showed a real appetite for the snow centre”

Richard Buckley, of Buckley Burnett Ltd, Development Consultants said: “This represents a big step towards delivering a unique development based in Middlesbrough that will attract visitors to the region.”

The nearest snow centre to Middlesbrough is in Castleford, West Yorkshire.
