ROAD safety is at the heart of the agenda of a special event designed to address the concerns of residents in leafy suburb.

With a number of accidents and near misses spotted on the roads in and around Nunthorpe village, ward councillors called on the police to investigate the problem.

Earlier this year, residents’ voiced concerns that a fatality will happen before anything is done about reducing the speeding problem on Mallowdale, Guisborough Road and The Avenue.

A meeting was arranged with members of Cleveland Police, Middlesbrough Council’s Highways Engineers, Councillors Lesley McGloin and Jon Rathmell got around the table to discuss the issues.

Despite no immediate resolutions being made the meeting as led to the event being organised in the village next Saturday (November 21) to try to deal with the issue of speeding motorists and poor driving in the village on the outskirts of Middlesbrough.

Throughout the day some members of Durham & Cleveland Specialist operations team who have appeared on Channel 5’s Police Interceptors will be on hand to speak about road safety.

Cllr Rathmell said: "Prior to and since been elected as councillor I have always had an active interest in road safety and pedestrian safety.

"We are as you appreciate, a semi- rural location and the majority of the roads were constructed long before cars became an active part in every person’s life.

"The roads in and around Nunthorpe do not appear to be coping particularly well with the volume of vehicles and the types of road users whether this be social cyclists or commuters.

"In recent months we have seen a considerable spike in accidents on our roads and little was been done to target this."

As part of the event a number of organisations will be taking part a variety of advice sessions, including: members of the Coulby Newham Neighbourhood Policing team; Cleveland Fire Brigade; Middlesbrough Council’s Road Safety Team; Middlesbrough Environment City will be attending offering free winter safety checks of bicycles; and members of the Cleveland Police Cadets.

Cllr Rathmell added: "There will also be many interactive and fun events for people of all ages ranging from school children, to runners, walkers to motorcyclists and car drivers. The event is targeted at the wider community and focussing heavily on road and pedestrian safety, and casualty reduction."

The event takes place on Saturday, November 21 at Nunthorpe Academy, Guisborough Road, Nunthorpe between 10am and 2pm.
