AN X Factor contestant, who plans to study in America, has returned to her old North-East school to officially open a new facility to help students achieve.

Singer and songwriter Abi Alton, from Guisborough was a pupil at the town’s Prior Pursglove College between 2010 and 2012 when she took A Levels in English language, geography and photography.

It recently spent £1m in refurbishing and extending learning areas, called Student Central, where teenagers can meet or study privately.

Miss Alton, who came eighth in last year’s hit ITV reality show, performed in front of staff and students at the college which was holding its own singing competition.

After auditioning in front of look-alike judges the contest was eventually won by group Curse Pie and the Amplifier, made up of Lizzy Rae from Marske and Natasha Graham from Saltburn, who scooped £200 and a recording session worth £250.

“It’s great to comeback as I really enjoyed my time here,” said Miss Alton. “It has been a chance to thank the college for all the support they gave me. The new building is really lovely and smart and it fits in and complements the old building. However, performing here is nearly as intimidating as the X-Factor

“At the present time I am writing and recording and will have an EP out in January. Next August I am hoping to go to music college in California.”

Prior Pursglove principal, Judy Burton, said: “I’m really excited that Abi has returned to the college to formally open our new Student Central facilities.

"This area has become the community spirit of the college. I believe very strongly that when our students enjoy all aspects of college life they are able to perform better academically.”
