GETTING the over 50s up and active is at the heart of a Sporting Chance initiative that is getting Middlesbrough fit.

And an ex-Middlesbrough player was showing off his skills when a team of footballers took part in a fun game in the town's Centre Square.

Frank Spraggon joined several other players for a game of Walking Football to promote the activities on offer through the lottery funded scheme.

The 68-year-old former Boro defender, who is a regular at the events organised by Sporting Chance, said: "It's a great way of meeting new people and making new friends. This is the first time I have played the Walking Football but I think it will great fun. Pulling the T-shirt on to play will give me just as much joy as pulling on a Boro shirt."

"As well as the sport side of it, we also go on days out and take part in a range of other activities."

Criag Woodhouse, who runs the Sporting Chance scheme in the town, said: "We do all kinds of activities which means everyone can take part whether they want to play table tennis, carpet bowls or walking football."

Anyone over the age of 50 who wants to take part in the free activities should call Mr Woodhouse 01642-515616 or email sporting.chance@hotmail.co.uk
