FIREFIGHTERS will be getting in the festive mood when then abseil down the Transporter Bridge dressed as spirited Santas.
To launch Cleveland Fire Brigade’s Christmas campaign officers from Coulby Newham Blue Watch will be descending 180ft down the iconic Teesside landmark on Wednesday.
In England in 2006 there were 3,530 accidental house fires in December, more than any other month of the year.
The aim of the stunt is to encourage residents to be safe this Christmas and to let people know there is help available for those struggling with the effects of fuel poverty and the credit crunch with the Brigade’s Winter Warmth campaign.
Crews in Stockton will be joining the Butterwick Hospice Christmas Party on Sunday, 21 December at 1.30pm when will be spreading fire safety messages.
Children will be receiving gifts which were bought with money raised at Stockton Fire Station’s recent open day from Santa in an air born sleigh using the Brigade’s hydraulic platform.
David Atkinson, Community Education Manager said: "We are urging you to think about fire safety ahead of the Christmas period, ensure you buy British Standard fairy lights, place candles in holders and away from curtains, don’t overload sockets and never leave cooking unattended."
