A TEENAGER high on drink and drugs went on a 30minute rampage which yesterday led to a two-year detention and training order.

Daryl Warin was masked and carrying a knife when he tried to break into a family's home and attempted to rob two people in the street.

The 17-year-old was finally caught by police after he smashed his way into a second house looking for things to steal, a court was told.

Warin's barrister, Duncan McReddie, said the teenager had received troubling news before he ran amok in the early hours of November 11.

He tried to force his way into a house in Hatfield Road, Billingham, at 4.20am, screaming: "Get this door open or it's coming off."

The occupant called the police, but before Warin could be traced, he had tried tomug two people walking in nearby Marsh House Avenue.Wearing a black balaclava and dark clothes, the teenager brandished a knife and demanded mobile phones from the couple.

He fled when one of his victims tried to reason with him, telling them: "This is my first time, I thought you would give me what you had."

Police found the teenager shortly after 4.50am after he had broken into an unoccupied house in Denbigh Road and damaged a kitchen door.

Warin, of Oaksham Drive, Billingham, admitted affray and burglary with intent to steal as well as two charges of attempted robbery.

Mr McReddie said immaturity as well as intoxication played a part in the teenager's behaviour at what was a stressful time in his life.

Judge Tony Briggs told Warin that he will have to serve one year in detention before being released to undergo a training programme.

"You appear before the court for a series of matters that were potentially very serious, " the judge told the teenager. "I am sure even you are aware of the incidents that occur with knives and the serious views courts take of them.

"This is the first time you have received a sentence in excess of a year and the sad truth of the matter is if you come back committing offences of this nature, it will be years."
