ONE of the largest multi-cultural events in the North East will benefit from a key sponsorship deal.

Organisers have announced that Middlesbrough College will be the main sponsors of the Middlesbrough Mela for the second year.

The annual celebration of culture and diversity, now in its 23rd year, will be held at the town’s Centre Square on the weekend of June 8-9.

Mela committee chairman Councillor Naveed Hussain said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Middlesbrough College on board for a second year, as we know they will do all they can to help us make the 2013 Mela the best ever.

“About 60% of our visitors are usually of Asian origin but the Mela is renowned for bringing together a wide cross-section of society and we aim to attract record crowds this year.”

The Mela, which attracts up to 40,000 visitors each year, features a mix of live music, world foods and a variety of stalls. For more information, visit boromela.co.uk.
