FOUR boxers will represent England in an international tournament being held in a south Durham town on Friday.

England will take on Denmark at a boxing dinner being held at Spennymoor Leisure Centre, County Durham.

Four of England’s fighters are members of the Spennymoor Boxing Club and head coach Robert Ellis said it was great honour for one club to be so well represented.

The four, Stuart McCrone, 33, Garry Dodds, 23, Reece Ellis, 19, 16-year-old Ricky Skelton will take on some of Denmark’s toughest fighters while spectators will also get to enjoy a three-course dinner.

The international boxing dinner has been funded by Spennymoor Area Action Partnership (AAP) and organised by Spennymoor Boxing Club.

Mr Ellis said: “It’s fantastic for the club and for the town to have this fight happening here.

“It’s even better for us having these four fighters, they will certainly be names to look out for in the future.”

Paul Bewley is Spennymoor Leisure Centre Manager.

He said: “We are proud to be able to host such a prestigious event.

“The boxing club now has a fantastic facility to be proud of. To have four boxers competing at a national level is a great achievement and testament to the hard work of the club and the centre.”

The fight has been organised by the Amateur Boxing Association and the four boxers met up with their England teammates, including Ferryhill fighter Bradley Saunders, for training this week.

Mr Ellis said the club has never been healthier and with the recently built state of the art gym will produce more international class champions.

He said: “The juniors who turn out in large numbers every session of every week are growing into respectful young men, which shows the professionalism and influence of this club, which has been running for 20 years now.

“The night itself is a guaranteed sell out as come the night of the show, nowhere in Britain will you see so many skilled boxers all on the same bill.”

Tickets are £40 and include pre-fight entertainment including dinner.
