A MULTI-MILLION pound project to improve traffic flow along a stretch of one of the region’s busiest roads started this week.

Highways England is undertaking a £3m programme of work on a ten-mile stretch of the A64 near York.

Resurfacing, drainage, bridge maintenance and upgrading of traffic signals are just some of the work being carried out between Bramham and Grimston Bar.

Highways England project manager Chris Dunn said: “We are carrying out a series of improvements along the A64 between Bramham and Grimston Bar over the next few months which will provide better journeys for drivers and improve road safety.

“It also includes improvements to the footpaths and kerbing, and other associated work such as cabling and renewing the white lines will be carried out as part of the two schemes.”

The initial phase started on Monday night at Grimston Bar and is expected to last just under two months.

From Monday next week, sections of the A64 will be reconstructed and resurfaced between Bramham and Askham Bryan which is expected be completed by the end of January.

Work will be carried out overnight when traffic flows are lowest and clearly signed diversions will be in place.

Work is also due to start in November on improving road safety at the Barton Hill crossroads.
