A DISABLED former soldier has been left devastated after raiders trashed his flat and stole his military medals - while he was in hospital.

Glen Fisher, 59, of Bootham Square in York, was being treated for MRSA when burglars broke into his council flat and damaged various items, as well as stealing medals awarded for his time in the Royal Army Medical Corps as a medical assistant.

He said three TVs, a Welsh dresser and valuable pictures were destroyed and walls were covered in paint. In addition, his passport was stolen and he estimates about £3,000 damage was done.

Mr Fisher said: "The flat has been completed trashed. They've ripped my life apart. They've destroyed all my furniture. They've come in and trashed everything.

"There is a lot missing. I am devastated that someone can do something like this to someone who is disabled. They're picking on the weak people."

Mr Fisher, who served in Germany band Northern Ireland, suffers from polymyalgia rheumatica, a condition that causes pain, stiffness and inflammation in the muscles around the shoulders, neck and hips.

A police spokesman said they were still investigating the break-in and appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
