HUMAN remains have been found by archaeologists working on the redevelopment of a city bus stop.

The remains, which include the discovery of a skull, are thought to be medieval.

Archaeologists are examining the site near former St Leonard’s Hospital in Museum Street, York, for further study.

The Museum Street bus stop is used by more than 600,000 people each year, and work is underway to install a new covered waiting area.

A City of York Council spokesman said: “York Archaeological Trust is working with us on the redevelopment of the bus stop at Museum Street.

“During ground works, archaeologists found what they believe to be medieval human remains.

"The YAT archaeologists will record and excavate any finding for further study. This will be in consultation with our archaeologist, John Oxley.”
