A NORTH Yorkshire Police officer has completed the New York Marathon in memory of a murdered colleague.

PC Jonny Birch flew to the US to take on the 26.2-mile race to raise money for a charity set up following the killing of PC Nicola Hughes while she was on duty in Manchester in 2012.

PC Birch said PC Hughes' father, Bryn, had requested for a police officer from each of the country's forces to join him at the marathon.

PC Birch, who works in York, said: “I have never run competitively before, but served six years in the army before joining the police and have always enjoyed running and keeping my fitness up.

“I’ve found it quite difficult fitting training in around my shifts, but managed to get myself to a distance and pace that I’m quite comfortable and confident with.

“I stopped drinking alcohol in April to aid my training, and hopefully that has given me a physical boost.”

PC Birch was accompanied on his trip by two colleagues from the force, while 33 other forces have put forward runners to take part in the marathon.

Ahead of the event, he said: “I’m very proud to be representing North Yorkshire, not only the police force but the county too, in the world’s largest international marathon.”

The PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund was set up to provide future opportunities for children who have lost a close family member through violent crimes.
