A HERON has died after being blasted by a gun in the North Yorkshire countryside.

The bird, which is a protected species, was discovered at Raskelf, near Easingwold, by a member of the public last Saturday afternoon.

It had a severe injury to its wing and was taken to a vet in Ripon, however it was unable to be saved and had to euthanised.

A police spokesman said: “We are conducting enquiries and are requesting the public's assistance to help determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“In particular, we are appealing for information from anybody who saw or heard shooting in the area on Saturday, May 7.”]
