THE WOMEN’S Institute is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a four day extravaganza event in Harrogate this September.

The WI Centennial Fair, from September 3 to 6 in Harrogate International Centre, is open to both members and non-members and is planned to become an annual event with more than 18,000 visitors expected.

A craft-lover’s dream, the event will feature more than 200 workshops, as well as cooking demonstrations and lifestyle seminars from speakers including Carol Smilie, Dr Hilary Jones, Bill Oddie and Louisa Fletcher.

WI member Vicky Carr, part of Spa Sweethearts group in Harrogate, said although her group was not exhibiting in the event, she was excited to attend and proud it will celebrate Yorkshire.

She said: “I think it will be fantastic, and what better place than Harrogate and North Yorkshire – the area has a very active WI presence and we have plenty of tea rooms to offer.

“I’m really looking forward to hearing a talk from Dr Helen Pankhurst – great-granddaughter of suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst – it’s something a bit different.”

Shirry Liram, director of the WI Centennial Fair, said: “Harrogate is the perfect location to launch this event as the facilities at the Harrogate International Centre are excellent.

“With the space available we’re able to set up four different seminar theatres and we think our visitors will really enjoy this interactive element to the fair."

Throughout the four day event there will be 150 hands-on workshops, demonstrations and seminars led by a line-up of celebrity speakers, specialists and leading professionals.

Advance tickets to the WI Centennial Fair are £11.50 for WI members, £13.75 for non-members and £7 for children. Visit www.thewishow.com/tickets or call 0844-848-0132.
