A COLD War bomber will make a final flypast over the region this weekend.

The last flying Vulcan, XH558, is making a farewell tour of the country as a salute to the crews who were prepared to give their lives in service of their country.

The powerful aircraft, which once carried Britain’s nuclear deterrent, will tip its distinctive Delta wing over the 17 locations around the UK where the remaining V-force aircraft will reside.

Spectators in the North-East and North Yorkshire will be able to see the Avro Vulcan, which is powered by four Rolls-Royce Olympus jet engines on Saturday.

It will fly over Elvington at 1.10pm, followed by Scarborough at 1.23pm and the North East Aircraft Museum in Sunderland at 1.43pm.

XH558, which was restored by the Sky Trust at a cost of more than £7m, has been a regular visitor over the years to Sunderland International Airshow where it remained a crowd favourite.
