A MAN is searching for relatives of his grandfather, William Thomas Roberts, who died in York on September 7, 1940.

Fred Roberts, who lives in Devon, is researching his family history and hopes to find relatives or friends who remember his grandfather.

William Roberts was born in Dublin in 1883 and joined the police in 1912, first with the East Riding Constabulary for a short time before being transferred to Leeds City Police in September 1912 until his retirement in 1937.

He married Annie Poole in 1915 and they had four children: Frederick George in 1920; Alice in 1921, Gordon in 1924, and Elizabeth Irene in 1927.

He was injured in 1921 while apprehending a shop breaker, and was commended by the City Justices for his bravery and vigilance regarding this.

After his first wife’s death in 1935 he was remarried in 1937 to Elsie Foster shortly before his retirement later that year.

He died in York County Hospital on September 7, 1940 and is buried in St Pauls Cemetery Shadwell, Leeds, and his address at the time of his death was 202, Bishopthorpe Road, York.
