MOTORISTS who drive in bus lanes in York have been getting away with not being fined for almost three years.

North Yorkshire Police have no record of anyone being fined for going in the clearly marked restricted areas between 2013 and March this year.

Taxi drivers and bus companies have now called for more to be done to stop people flouting traffic restrictions.

City of York Council issued 56,000 fines totalling £1.3m to tackle congestion during the failed Lendal Bridge scheme and companies are concerned that no one has been fined over the bus lane contraventions.

Will Pearson of bus company First in York, said: “Bus lanes and bus priorities play a crucial role in delivering reliable services for our customers. Reliability is the key to attracting people out of cars and reducing congestion and supporting the crucial role that buses play in the economy of York.”
