MORE than 100 former soldiers have been interviewed about their front line experiences for an oral history project.

The two-year scheme to develop an audio archive in York was funded by a £36,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and run by The Royal Dragoon Guards Association.

Volunteers interviewed serving and former members of the regiment and their families from the period between the Second World War and recent operations in Afghanistan.

Copies of the archive will be deposited in the York Army Museum in Tower Street and other museums throughout the country, where it will be available to academic historians, members of the public and people researching family history.

The regional head of the HLF, Fiona Spiers, said archives provided a valuable resource for anyone wanting to explore the past.

“The Royal Dragoon Guards’ project has generated a notable collection of the experiences and memories of our committed service men and women from the Second World War to the present day," she said.
