HISTORIANS are to start digging into the past at one of the most photographed spots in the region.

Archaeologists are to start investigative work on the mound of Clifford’s Tower in the centre of York.

The work is part of the first phase of a project by English Heritage to understand the archaeology and make-up of the tower and its earth mound

It is part of a long-term conservation project and planning for the future of the ruin.

The work is to begin just as the mound’s famous daffodils are preparing to bloom.

However the daffodils in the affected areas will be carefully removed in clumps before the work begins, stored elsewhere and later returned to their original spot.
