A WOMAN in her 70s was killed when her car collided with a lamppost and cut the power to local homes.

The incident happened at about 11am today (Tuesday, February 17) in Bishopthorpe, near York, and police are now appealing for witnesses.

A silver Ford Fiesta collided with a lamppost in Drummond View and the 74-year-old driver – a local woman who has yet to be named – was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result of the smash power was temporarily cut to homes in the area because of the dame to the lamppost and the road was closed for four hours while officers examined the scene and conducted enquiries.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the incident. Contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option two and ask for Traffic Constable Lee Cobb.
