DRIVERS are facing needless frustrating delays at traffic lights because high-tech devices aimed at reducing congestion have fallen into disrepair.

Sensors aimed at easing traffic flow are out of action at about 30 junctions across York, it has been revealed.

The induction loops, buried under the road surface at the approaches to traffic lights, have mainly failed because of a general deterioration of the surfaces.

Tony Clarke, the council's head of transport, said resurfacing was required at most of the junctions before the loops could be repaired.

He said £300,000 had been committed this financial year to address the problem, allowing five junctions on a priority list to be resurfaced and loops to be replaced.

A further £200,000 had been allocated in the proposed budget for next year to upgrade the next highest priority junctions on the list.
